Why Your NBN Is Slower Than the Plan You Pay For
You are paying for a 100Mbps plan. The speed test says 32. Somewhere between the plan you bought and the browser you are staring at, sixty-eight megabits went missing, and the person on the support line is asking whether you have tried restarting the router.
This is one of the most common complaints we hear from households across Sydney, and the frustrating part is that "slow NBN" is not one problem. It is at least five different problems that produce an identical symptom. The connection type at your address puts a hard ceiling on what is possible. The plan's typical evening speed may be well below its headline number. The line itself may be degraded. Your router may be a decade old. Or — most often of all — the NBN is delivering exactly what you pay for and your Wi-Fi is throwing most of it away before it reaches the laptop.
Working out which one you have is entirely doable without any special equipment, and it matters, because the fix for each is completely different. Upgrading your plan will not help a Wi-Fi problem. Replacing your router will not help a congested plan. This guide walks through how to find the real answer.
First, test in a way that actually tells you something
Most speed tests are run in the worst possible conditions and then treated as gospel. Someone runs a test on a phone, over Wi-Fi, from the back bedroom, at 8pm, while someone else streams in 4K, and concludes the NBN is broken. The test is not wrong, but it is measuring the whole chain at its weakest moment, and it cannot tell you which link is failing.
To get a number you can reason about, remove as many variables as you can:
- Plug in. Connect a laptop directly to the router with an Ethernet cable. This single step resolves a large share of "slow NBN" complaints on the spot, because it takes Wi-Fi out of the equation entirely — and if the laptop itself is the slow part, that is a home computer support question rather than a network one.
- Test off-peak, then on-peak. Run one test around midday and another between 7pm and 10pm. The gap between them is the single most useful number in this whole exercise.
- Quiet the house. Pause streaming, big downloads, and cloud backups. You are trying to measure capacity, not what is left over after everything else has taken a share.
- Test more than once. A single result can be a fluke. Three tests a few minutes apart tell you whether the number is stable or bouncing around.
Write down what you get. Wired midday, wired evening, and wireless in the room where the problem actually bothers you. Those three numbers will point at the culprit before you speak to anyone.
Your connection type sets the ceiling
Not every address can reach every speed, and this catches people out constantly. The NBN reaches homes by several different technologies, and the one at your address determines what is physically achievable regardless of which plan you buy.
- Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) runs fibre the whole way to the house. It comfortably supports the fastest retail tiers and is largely immune to the distance and copper-quality problems below.
- Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) uses the existing pay-TV style coaxial cable for the last stretch. It performs well, though it shares capacity locally, so a busy neighbourhood can be felt.
- Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) brings fibre to a small unit in the street pit and uses a short copper run into the house. The copper distance is short, so speeds are usually solid.
- Fibre to the Node (FTTN) brings fibre to a cabinet in the street and uses existing copper from there to the house. This is where most disappointment lives. The further you are from that node and the older the copper, the lower your maximum, and no plan upgrade can change physics. Plenty of FTTN homes simply cannot reach 100Mbps.
- Fixed Wireless and Satellite serve outer and regional addresses, with their own capacity and weather considerations.
If you are on FTTN and your wired midday test tops out well short of your plan, you have probably found your answer, and it is one worth confirming before you pay for a faster tier — checking what a property can actually support is the first thing our internet installation team looks at. It is worth checking whether your address is eligible for a fibre upgrade, since availability has expanded considerably and the process is usually initiated through your provider rather than directly.
Headline speed and evening speed are not the same number
Retail plans are sold with a tier name — the number in the marketing — and a separate typical evening speed, which is the figure providers are required to publish for the busy period between 7pm and 11pm. Those two numbers can differ substantially, and the second one is the honest one, because it reflects how much capacity your provider actually buys for the people sharing your area.
This is why the midday-versus-evening comparison matters so much. A connection that delivers near its tier at midday and collapses at 8pm is not faulty. It is congested, and that is a commercial problem rather than a technical one. The fix is not a new router; it is a provider that buys enough capacity, or a plan whose published evening figure matches what you actually need.
A connection that is equally slow at midday and at 8pm is telling a different story. That points at the line, the connection type, or something inside your house.
When it is genuinely a fault
Some patterns are characteristic of a real problem on the line rather than a limitation or a busy period:
- The connection drops out entirely and re-establishes several times a day, which usually shows up as a light changing on the modem.
- Speeds have fallen sharply and permanently rather than gradually, with no change at your end.
- Performance degrades noticeably in wet weather, a classic symptom of moisture in copper joints on FTTN and FTTC.
- The line syncs at a rate well below what it used to, which your provider can see even when a speed test looks merely mediocre.
When you report this, bring your evidence: the wired results, the times you ran them, the dropout pattern, and how long it has been happening. A fault report backed by dates and numbers moves through the process considerably faster than "the internet is slow", and it makes it much harder for the conversation to end at "try restarting it".
The most common culprit is inside your house
Here is the uncomfortable truth behind a large share of slow-internet complaints: the NBN is delivering what it promised, and the home network is the bottleneck. If your wired test looks healthy and your wireless test does not, the problem is not the NBN at all.
Several things cause this, and they compound:
- The router supplied years ago. Hardware handed out with a plan several years back can struggle to pass modern speeds even when the line is fine, particularly across wireless. It is the single most common upgrade we recommend.
- Distance and building materials. Sydney's double-brick and rendered homes are unusually hostile to wireless signal. A router in the front room of a long house is not going to serve the back of it well, and no plan upgrade will change that.
- Placement. Routers end up wherever the wall socket is, which is frequently a corner, a cupboard, or behind a television. Central and out in the open beats tucked away every time.
- Band and channel congestion. In apartments and townhouses you are competing with every neighbour's network for the same airtime, and moving what you can onto the cleaner 5GHz band is often the quickest win. Remote IT support can usually make these changes without anyone visiting.
Fixing this is design work rather than a purchase. Getting coverage right across a whole home usually means the right equipment in the right places, and sometimes a wired backhaul to a second access point. A short diagnostic order that works
If you want one sequence to follow, this is the one we use, and it resolves most cases before the end:
- Run a wired test at midday. If this is close to your plan, the line and plan are fine — go to the Wi-Fi steps.
- Run a wired test in the evening. A large drop means congestion, which is a plan or provider conversation.
- Both slow? Check your connection type. On FTTN, you may already be at your ceiling.
- Still unexplained, or dropping out? Report it as a fault, with your numbers and dates.
- Wired is good but wireless is poor? The connection is doing its job. Look at router age, placement, and coverage.
That order matters, because it eliminates the cheapest things to check first and stops you buying hardware to solve a problem that hardware will not touch.
When the household has outgrown its connection
One scenario deserves its own mention, because it looks like a fault and is not. A home that worked perfectly two years ago can feel broken today without anything having failed. Two people now work from home. There are three streaming services running at once, a couple of gaming consoles, a video doorbell, several cameras, and a growing pile of smart devices, all of which want a share of the same connection and the same airtime.
Upload is usually where this bites first, because most residential plans give far less of it than download, and video calls, cloud backups and camera uploads all compete for that narrow lane. Smart devices bring their own version of this problem, since many of them cling to the crowded 2.4GHz band and behave badly when it is congested. If yours drop off regularly, that has its own specific causes and fixes.
Getting it properly sorted
Slow internet is worth taking seriously, because it quietly taxes everything: the work call that has to be redialled, the evening that gets spent watching a buffering wheel, the child's class that drops out. Most of it is fixable, and a surprising amount of it is fixable without spending anything at all beyond an hour of methodical testing.
