Free Hard Drive and SSD Recycling with Secure Erasure in Sydney
That box of old drives in your cupboard is doing two things at once: cluttering your space and quietly holding every file you ever saved to it. Recycling those drives properly should not cost you anything, and with NexusByte it does not.
Bring your retired hard drives and SSDs to us and we will securely erase them using wiping software that overwrites the data, then send the hardware into responsible e-waste recycling channels. The service is free for standard drives, and open to households and businesses in Sydney and across Australia.
Software erasure is the right choice for most everyday situations, meaning working drives with typical home or office files on them. Where a drive has failed or the data is highly sensitive, we will say so honestly and point you towards degaussing or shredding instead.
Our free drive recycling includes:
Secure software-based wipingHard drives and SSDs acceptedNo cost for standard recyclingResponsible e-waste disposalHonest guidance on tougher cases
Free does not mean careless. Every drive we accept for recycling is erased before it moves anywhere near a recycling stream.
Software wiping overwrites the drive so the original files can no longer be read. On working hard drives and SSDs holding everyday data, this makes the hardware safe to leave your possession while keeping the materials in good condition for recovery. It is a genuinely green outcome: the data is dealt with, and the metals and components inside the drive get another life instead of sitting in landfill. Drives that cannot be reliably wiped, because they are faulty, damaged or simply will not respond, are flagged to you rather than quietly passed along, and we will suggest a physical destruction option that actually closes the gap.

How Free Drive Recycling Works
We keep the process deliberately simple, because there is no reason retiring a drive should be complicated.
1. Gather Your Old Drives
Round up the hard drives and SSDs you no longer need, whether they are loose drives, inside old computers or sitting in external enclosures.
2. Drop Off or Get in Touch
Bring them to our Sydney workshop, or contact us first if you have a larger quantity from a business clean-out and want to talk through logistics.
3. Secure Erasure
Each working drive is wiped with overwriting software so the data on it cannot be brought back with recovery tools. Any drive that will not wipe reliably is set aside and discussed with you.
4. Responsible Recycling
Erased drives head into e-waste recycling streams where the metals and materials are recovered, rather than ending up as landfill.
When Free Erasure Is Not Enough
Degaussing for Magnetic Media
For hard drives and backup tapes carrying sensitive records, degaussing destroys the magnetic layer itself, working even when the drive no longer powers on.
Secure disk erasing is the software destruction of every piece of data on a drive, carried out to a recognised standard and verified afterwards, so the drive can be safely reused, resold or passed on. Unlike shredding, the hardware survives — which is the point when the machine still has years of life in it.
It is the right method for laptops being reassigned to new staff, computers going to a new owner, drives coming back at the end of a lease, and any equipment leaving your control with data still on it.
Why a Format Is Not an Erase
A quick format rewrites the file index and leaves the actual contents untouched on the disk. The files are no longer listed, so the drive appears empty — but they are still physically there, and recovery software of the sort we use every day retrieves them without difficulty.
Proper erasure overwrites every addressable sector on the drive, then reads it back to confirm the overwrite succeeded. That verification step is what separates erasure from a format: it produces evidence that the data is gone rather than an assumption.
This gap is where most accidental data disclosures come from. Secondhand drives bought online routinely still hold tax records, client files and saved passwords, because someone formatted them and reasonably believed that was enough.
How Many Passes Do You Actually Need?
Far fewer than the folklore suggests. The multi-pass routines people still ask for date from an era of much lower-density magnetic drives. On any modern drive a single verified overwrite pass is sufficient — current guidance from NIST and equivalent bodies reflects that, and additional passes add hours without adding security.
What matters far more than pass count is coverage and verification: that every sector was reached, including remapped and hidden areas, and that the result was checked afterwards rather than assumed. A verified single pass beats an unverified seven-pass wipe every time.
SSDs Need a Different Method Entirely
An overwrite pass is unreliable on solid state media. The drive's controller decides where data physically sits and moves it constantly for wear levelling, so blocks held in over-provisioned space are never touched by a conventional overwrite and can retain readable fragments.
Solid state drives are therefore sanitised using their own built-in secure erase or cryptographic erase commands, which discard the internal encryption key and render every block unreadable at once — including the areas an overwrite cannot reach. Where a drive is faulty and will not accept those commands, shredding is the reliable fallback.
What Erasure Should Include
Every addressable sector overwritten, including remapped and host-protected areas.
A verification pass confirming the overwrite actually took, not just that it ran.
The correct method for the media — overwrite for magnetic drives, secure or cryptographic erase for SSDs.
A certificate per drive recording serial number, method, standard and date.
A clear report on any drive that failed erasure, so it can be shredded instead of quietly passed on.
That last point matters more than it sounds. A drive too faulty to erase is also too faulty to verify, and it should never leave on the assumption that the wipe probably worked. Where erasure fails, the honest answer is destruction — and we will tell you which drives fell into that category rather than returning a clean-looking report.

Yes, for standard hard drives and SSDs the erasure and recycling cost you nothing. Very large commercial lots, or jobs that need degaussing or shredding instead of wiping, are quoted based on volume and method, and we will always tell you before anything is charged.
Is software wiping actually secure?
For working drives holding everyday data, yes. Overwriting the drive defeats the recovery software an opportunist would use. For highly sensitive information, or drives that cannot be verified because they are failing, physical destruction is the safer call, and we will tell you when that applies.
How long does secure erasure take?
It depends on the drive capacity, its speed and its condition, since every sector has to be overwritten. Large modern drives can take several hours each, and we work through batches in turn. We will give you an idea of timing when you drop off.
Can I wipe the drive myself before recycling?
You can, but be aware that a standard format is not a wipe, and free tools are easy to misuse by skipping hidden areas or choosing a quick option. If you do wipe first, there is no harm in it being wiped again as part of our process. Either way, do not rely on deletion alone.
What happens to my drive after it is wiped?
It enters responsible e-waste recycling channels where the aluminium, steel, circuit boards and other materials are recovered for reuse. Nothing goes to general landfill, which is a large part of why we offer the service in the first place.
Do you look at the files on my drive?
No. Drives are logged, queued and wiped, and our technicians have no reason or permission to browse their contents. Confidentiality is treated the same whether the drive comes from a business server or a family computer.
