Data Backup & File Recovery | Home & Family Backup
Every family photo, document and file on your computer is one hard drive failure away from disappearing. NexusByte delivers home data backup across Sydney, protecting the memories and paperwork you cannot replace with backup systems that actually run — not good intentions you set up once and quietly forget about.
We set up cloud backup through iCloud, Google Photos or OneDrive, configure external drive backup for your PC or Mac, and switch on automatic backup so protection happens without you lifting a finger. Prefer a physical copy? We'll pair cloud storage with a local drive so your files are covered twice.
Already lost something? Our file recovery service helps Sydney households retrieve accidentally deleted photos and documents where recovery is possible, then puts safeguards in place so it never happens again. From photo backup for a lifetime of memories to complete household coverage, we make protecting your digital life genuinely simple.

What Is Home Data Backup and Why Does It Matter?
Home data backup is a system that automatically copies your photos, documents and files to a second location, such as cloud storage, an external drive or both, so nothing is lost when a device fails or a file is deleted. It suits any Sydney household with irreplaceable photos, tax records or school work sitting on a single computer or phone.
Most people only think about backup after something has already gone wrong: a phone dropped in the pool, a laptop that will not turn on, a hard drive that simply stops one morning. Drives rarely give much warning. Occasional clicking noises, files that take ages to open or a computer that freezes during saves are all late-stage symptoms, and by then a copy of your data may be the only thing standing between you and permanent loss.
A proper home backup covers three things: your photo library, your documents, and the settings and files scattered across each family member's devices. We map out where everything actually lives before recommending anything, because in most homes the honest answer is that nobody is quite sure.
Cloud Backup or External Drive: Which Is Right for Your Family?
Cloud services such as iCloud, Google Photos and OneDrive back up automatically in the background and keep your data offsite, which protects you against theft, fire and flood as well as hardware failure. The trade-off is an ongoing storage subscription and the need for a decent internet connection for the first big upload.
An external drive or NAS is a one-off purchase, restores large photo libraries much faster, and keeps everything under your own roof. The weakness is exactly that: it lives in the same house as the computer it protects, and a drive that is only plugged in occasionally is a backup that only runs occasionally.
For most families we recommend a layered approach: cloud for photos and everyday documents, plus a scheduled external drive backup for the full library. If you already pay for Microsoft 365, OneDrive is often the smartest starting point, and our email and Microsoft 365 setup service can get the whole family onto the same plan properly.
Can Accidentally Deleted Files Be Recovered?
Often, yes, but the odds depend heavily on what you do in the first hour. When a file is deleted, the space it occupied is marked as free and gradually overwritten by new data. Every photo saved, update installed or video streamed after the deletion reduces the chance of recovery.
Ransomware is the exception worth planning for, because it encrypts the files rather than deleting them and a backup is usually the only way back. If files have already been locked or the machine is behaving oddly, deal with the infection first through virus and malware removal — restoring onto a machine that is still compromised simply loses the copy as well.
If you have just lost something important, stop using that computer or drive straight away and get in touch. We start every file recovery job in Sydney with an assessment: checking the recycle bin, cloud version history and sync folders first, because the easy wins are surprisingly common, before moving to recovery software on the drive itself.
We are upfront about the hard cases. Modern SSDs clear deleted data more aggressively than old spinning drives, so recovery is not always possible. That is why our work is covered by a no fix, no fee guarantee: if we cannot get your files back, you do not pay for the attempt.
How Much Does Home Backup Setup Cost in Sydney?
The cost of home backup in Sydney depends on a handful of practical factors rather than a one-size-fits-all rate. We assess your situation first, then give you a fixed quote before any work starts, with no hidden fees.
- How many devices need backing up: one laptop is a smaller job than a family of phones, tablets and computers
- The size of your photo library, which affects both setup time and the cloud storage tier you need
- Whether new hardware such as an external drive or NAS is required, or you already own something suitable
- Whether the job includes recovering lost files as well as setting up backup going forward
Keep in mind that cloud storage itself is a separate subscription you pay to Apple, Google or Microsoft. Part of our job is making sure you land on the right storage tier, because plenty of households are paying for space they will never use, and just as many are one photo away from a full account that has quietly stopped backing up.
What Happens During a Backup Setup Visit?
Every job follows the same four steps: assessment and quote, a scheduled visit or remote session, the setup itself, then testing and handover. The testing step is the one most DIY backups skip, and it is the one that matters most.
A backup you have never restored from is really just a hope. Before we finish, we run a test restore, pulling real files back out of the backup to prove the whole chain works. We then set the schedule so backups run automatically, and show you how to spot the warning signs that something has stopped syncing.
Backup also pairs naturally with other jobs. If you are moving to a new machine, our new computer transfer service brings your files, photos and settings across and verifies everything arrived, and our broader home computer support can keep the whole setup healthy over time. When you are ready, you can book a backup assessment online, or browse the rest of our home IT support services to see what else we can tidy up in the same visit.

Absolutely recommend NexusByte and will be first point of contact for any future hardware support and fix services, and hopefully dealing once again with Laith. The entire process was an A+ experience from the moment the call was answered, through to the diagnostic, repair and return of the damaged laptop. Laith is fantastic. In every element of his service and support. Very personable, engaging, knowledgeable and understands the critical importance of service to customers. He provided clear information for every step from booking the appointment, was on time for visiting my home for diagnosis + collection and for return of the item (on a weekend!), for what to expect through the diagnostic works, and for the quoting and payment process. The price for the services provided was very reasonable and affordable. One of the best service experiences I have had and right from 'go'.
