What Is Email Security and Filtering?
Email security and filtering is a protective layer that scans every inbound and outbound message for phishing, malware, spam and impersonation before it reaches a mailbox. It is built for Sydney businesses that live in their inbox and cannot afford a fraudulent invoice or malicious attachment slipping through to staff.
Email remains the front door for most attacks on Australian businesses precisely because it works: one convincing message to one busy person is all it takes. Filtering shifts that decision away from individual staff and into a system that inspects links, attachments and sender reputation on every single message.
The service covers both directions. Inbound filtering stops threats arriving; outbound filtering stops a compromised account in your business from spraying spam or malware at your clients, which damages both your reputation and your domain's deliverability.
How Phishing and Business Email Compromise Actually Unfold
Understanding the attack makes the defence make sense. A typical phishing campaign uses a lookalike domain or a spoofed display name, a plausible pretext such as a shared document or missed delivery, and a login page that harvests credentials. Once an attacker holds a real mailbox, the second phase begins. No filter stops every message, which is why the people reading them matter — security awareness training teaches staff to spot the ones that get through.
Business Email Compromise is that second phase. The attacker reads correspondence quietly, learns who pays invoices and how, then inserts a message at the right moment: new bank details for a supplier, an urgent transfer request from the boss. Because it comes from a genuine account or a near-perfect imitation, staff rarely question it.
Good email security attacks this chain at several points: blocking the initial phish, detecting impersonation patterns, flagging newly registered lookalike domains and alerting on suspicious behaviour. Pairing it with a broader digital security check closes off the account-level weaknesses attackers rely on.
What a Properly Configured Email Gateway Includes
There is a large gap between switching on a spam filter and deploying email security properly. A complete implementation for a Sydney business includes:
