Mobile phone data recovery is the retrieval of photos, videos, contacts and messages from Android phones and tablets that have a broken screen, will not power on, have been through water, or have lost data to a failed update or accidental factory reset. It covers Samsung, Google Pixel, Oppo, Motorola and the rest of the Android field. Apple devices work differently and are handled under Apple data recovery.
Phones are the one device where the data is almost always irreplaceable and almost never backed up properly. A laptop usually has a copy somewhere; a phone typically holds the only version of years of photos, and the owner discovers this at the worst possible moment.
Every Android phone made in the last several years encrypts its storage by default, with the key tied to the device's own secure hardware and unlocked by your PIN, pattern or fingerprint. The memory chip can be removed and read and still produce nothing but ciphertext. Recovery therefore usually means reviving the phone far enough to unlock normally, rather than extracting the chip.
That is why a broken screen is often good news. If the phone still runs, the data is reachable — the obstacle is that you cannot see or tap anything. Connecting an external display or using the phone's own USB display support frequently restores enough control to unlock it and pull everything off, without opening the device at all.
A phone that will not power on is the harder case. Charging faults, a dead battery or a damaged port are often repairable enough to get one clean session; corrosion across the board after a water incident is considerably less predictable.
Water rarely kills a phone immediately. Corrosion does, and it works over days.
Usually not, and it is fairer to say so plainly. On an encrypted phone a factory reset discards the encryption key rather than wiping each file, which renders the remaining data unreadable in an instant. Unlike a formatted memory card, there is no underlying copy left to reconstruct.
What can often be rescued instead is everything that synced before the reset — Google Photos, contacts tied to the account, WhatsApp backups sitting in Google Drive. That is frequently a better outcome than people expect, and it costs nothing to check before assuming the worst.
For most jobs, yes — the PIN or pattern is what unlocks the encryption, and without it the storage stays sealed. It is used solely to access the device for the recovery and nothing else. Every job is handled confidentially, your data is not browsed beyond what the work requires, and working copies are securely destroyed once you confirm you have everything.
