Solid state drives fail without warning. One day your laptop boots normally, the next the drive has vanished from the BIOS and years of work is out of reach. NexusByte offers professional SSD data recovery from our Sydney base, with secure mail-in options for clients right across Australia.
SSDs do not fail the way hard drives do. There are no clicking noises or slow warnings — instead you get controller failures, firmware bugs that lock the drive into a busy state, and sudden electronic death that leaves your files stranded on otherwise healthy NAND chips.
We will always give you an honest read on your chances before you commit to anything. Assessment is free, and our no recovery, no fee policy applies to every SSD job we accept.
Our SSD data recovery includes:
NVMe and M.2 drives2.5-inch SATA SSDsFailed controller recoveryFirmware fault diagnosisLaptop and MacBook drivesExternal and portable SSDs
Recovering an SSD means working with the drive's own logic — controllers, firmware and flash translation layers — rather than the platters and heads of a traditional hard drive.
The critical distinction in SSD recovery is between physical failure and deletion. When a drive dies electronically — a failed controller, corrupt firmware or a blown power circuit — your files are usually still sitting in the NAND, and specialised recovery tools can often reach them by working around the fault. Deletion is different: modern operating systems issue TRIM commands that tell an SSD to clear deleted blocks, and once the drive has processed them, that data is genuinely gone. We tell you which situation you are in before any money changes hands, because honest triage matters more than optimistic promises.
Controller and electronics fault diagnosis
Firmware analysis and repair
Safe handling of drives stuck in busy states
Direct flash access where the fault allows
Straightforward triage of TRIM-affected drives
File system repair on recovered volumes
Every drive gets a clear verdict: what failed, what is realistically recoverable and what it will take to get there.

Our SSD Recovery Process
A staged process keeps fragile drives safe and keeps you in control of the cost.
1. Free initial triage
Describe the symptoms — not detected, freezing, disappeared mid-use — and we will tell you whether recovery looks viable and what to avoid in the meantime.
2. Fault diagnosis
The drive's electronics, controller behaviour and firmware state are examined to pinpoint the failure. You get a quote and a frank estimate of your chances before approving the job.
3. Stabilisation and imaging
Once the fault is worked around, the drive's contents are imaged to stable storage. Unreliable drives are read carefully and progressively to capture as much as possible before they degrade further.
4. Extraction and repair
Files are extracted from the image, damaged file systems are repaired and encrypted volumes are unlocked with the credentials you supply.
5. Verification and delivery
You review a listing of what was recovered, then your files are handed back on fresh media along with our recommendations for the failed drive.

Failed Controller and Sudden-Death Recovery
The most common SSD failure is the drive that simply vanishes — no detection in the BIOS, no warning signs beforehand, nothing.
SSD data recovery is the retrieval of files from solid state drives that have stopped being detected, lost their partition, been formatted, or failed electronically. It covers the SATA SSDs in older laptops, the NVMe drives in current machines, and the storage soldered directly onto ultrabook and tablet boards where the drive cannot simply be unplugged.
It is a different discipline from hard drive work, and that difference decides what is possible. A failed hard drive is a mechanical problem with data sitting intact on a platter. A failed SSD is usually an electronics problem, where the flash memory still holds your files but the drive can no longer present them to a computer.
Why Is an SSD Harder to Recover Than a Hard Drive?
Every SSD keeps a private map of where your data physically lives, and that map is managed by its controller. Files are spread across the NAND chips and constantly moved for wear levelling, so the arrangement on the chips bears no resemblance to the folders you see. Lose the controller or corrupt that map and the raw data is still there but effectively scrambled.
This is why chip-off recovery alone is rarely enough on a modern drive. The flash can be read and still produce nothing usable until the controller's translation layer is reconstructed. Manufacturer-specific behaviour, and hardware encryption tied to that individual controller, are what separate a straightforward job from a specialist one.
What Are the Warning Signs an SSD Is About to Fail?
Solid state drives usually give less notice than hard drives, and they rarely make a sound. These are the signals worth acting on straight away:
The drive disappears from the BIOS or Disk Management, sometimes returning after a restart.
The system suddenly turns read-only — files open normally but nothing can be saved.
Freezes during large copies, or applications hanging when they touch particular files.
The drive reports a fraction of its real capacity, or shows up with the manufacturer's recovery name instead of its own.
Bad block or media wearout warnings in the SMART data, or a drive running unusually hot.
A read-only SSD is the one to act on fastest. It is often the controller protecting itself as it fails, and it is usually the last window in which the data can still be read normally.
What Should You Do the Moment an SSD Fails?
The first hour matters more on an SSD than on any other media, because the drive keeps housekeeping in the background whenever it has power. Every minute it stays running, garbage collection may be clearing the very blocks holding your files.
Shut the machine down properly and leave it off. Do not keep restarting to see whether it comes good.
Do not run CHKDSK, Disk Utility repair or a format, even when prompted. Each writes to a drive that is already struggling.
Skip the free recovery downloads. On a failing controller they add hours of read stress for nothing.
If the drive is encrypted with BitLocker or FileVault, find the recovery key before anything else — without it, recovered data stays unreadable.
How Long Does SSD Recovery Take?
A logical fault — a lost partition, a formatted drive, a corrupted file system — is often resolved within a day or two once the drive is imaged. Controller and firmware failures take longer, because the work involves identifying the exact controller family and rebuilding the translation layer before a single file can be read.
Soldered storage adds another step again, since the chips have to be worked on in place or removed under controlled heat. We give you a realistic timeframe with the quote after assessment rather than an optimistic one upfront, and where a job turns out to be one of the genuinely hard ones, we say so plainly instead of running up hours.

It depends on the nature of the fault — a logical problem is far less involved than a controller or firmware failure — along with the drive's interface, capacity and whether encryption is present. You receive a firm quote after the free assessment, before committing to anything. If we recover nothing, our no recovery, no fee policy means you owe nothing.
My SSD is no longer detected — is my data recoverable?
Often, yes. A drive that suddenly stops appearing usually has a controller, firmware or power fault, and in those cases the NAND chips holding your data are frequently untouched. Recovery then hinges on working around the failed component, which is exactly what our diagnosis establishes. We will tell you plainly if your particular fault is one of the hard ones.
Can you recover files I deleted from an SSD?
Honestly, usually not. Modern systems send TRIM commands when files are deleted, instructing the SSD to wipe those blocks internally, and once that happens the data cannot be brought back by anyone. There are exceptions — drives in enclosures that block TRIM, systems where it was disabled, or a drive powered off quickly — so it is worth asking, but we will not sell you false hope.
How long does SSD recovery take?
Simple logical jobs are typically quicker, while controller and firmware faults take longer because the drive has to be stabilised before anything can be read. Timeframes also stretch when a drive is deteriorating and must be imaged gently. We give you an estimate with your quote and keep you posted as the job progresses.
Should I try recovery software before sending the drive in?
If the drive is failing, we recommend against it. Recovery scans hammer a drive with sustained reads, and every extra hour of operation on faulty hardware risks losing more data permanently. Software also cannot help when the drive is not detected at all. Power it off and get a free assessment first — it costs nothing to ask.
Will my personal files stay private during recovery?
Yes. Access to recovered data is restricted to the engineers assigned to your case and everything runs under a documented, secure process. If your drive uses BitLocker or FileVault, we only unlock it with credentials you provide and we never retain them afterwards. Our working copies are wiped once you confirm you have your files.
