iTunes and Finder Backup Recovery, Sydney and Australia-Wide
An iTunes or Finder backup is supposed to be the safety net — until the day it reports as corrupt, restores halfway and stops, or sits on a computer that itself has died. NexusByte extracts photos, messages and contacts from damaged and incomplete iPhone backups for clients in Sydney and all over Australia.
These backups are not simple folders of files. Your data is split into thousands of hash-named pieces indexed by a manifest database, and when that index breaks, iTunes declares the whole backup unusable even though most of the underlying content is often still sitting there. We work directly with the .mdbackup and manifest structures to rebuild what the software has given up on.
We examine your backup free of charge, quote before touching anything further, and apply our No Fix, No Fee policy — if nothing usable comes out, you keep your money.

Our iTunes backup recovery includes:
How We Rebuild a Broken Backup
When iTunes refuses a backup, it is usually reacting to a broken index rather than missing content — and that distinction is where recovery lives.
We begin by taking a working copy of the entire backup set so the original is never modified. Then we analyse the manifest database that maps hash-named files back to their real names and locations, repairing or reconstructing that mapping where it has been damaged. From there we parse the individual data stores — the photo records, the message databases, the contact and calendar files — and export their contents into formats you can actually open and use. For encrypted backups we are completely transparent: the backup password is mandatory, because Apple encrypts these archives end to end and there is no legitimate way around a lost password.
It is forensic-style work applied to an everyday disaster, and it regularly revives backups that iTunes flatly refuses to read.
Built for Broken Backups. Engineered for Every Corruption.
Backup failures arrive in many disguises. These are the ones we untangle most often for clients around Australia.
If a backup exists in any state at all, it is worth letting us look before you write it off.
Your Data, Protected. Guaranteed.
We safeguard and recover your data with clear pricing and a no-risk promise on recovery work.
Your data stays backed up, secure, and recoverable when you need it most.

The goal is not a repaired backup file for its own sake — it is your actual content, delivered in a form any device can use.
You review the extracted content before payment, so the value of the recovery is never a matter of trust alone.
The Backup Recovery Process
Backup jobs are handled with the same rigour as physical recoveries, whether the files reach us on a laptop, an external drive or an upload from anywhere in Australia.

What Is iTunes Backup Recovery?
iTunes backup recovery is the extraction of photos, messages, contacts and app data from an iPhone or iPad backup stored on a computer — whether that backup refuses to restore, has become corrupted, sits on a drive from a machine you no longer use, or is encrypted with a password nobody can remember.
On modern macOS these backups are made by Finder rather than iTunes, but the format is unchanged and people still call them iTunes backups. The same applies either way.
This matters because a backup is often the only surviving copy. When a phone is lost, stolen or beyond repair, the backup on an old laptop becomes the entire archive — and discovering it will not restore is a bad moment.
Why Will a Backup Refuse to Restore?
Most commonly, the backup was interrupted. iOS backups are written as thousands of small files with a manifest tying them together, and a cable pulled out or a computer sleeping mid-write leaves that manifest incomplete. iTunes then declares the backup corrupt and refuses to touch it — even though the great majority of the content is sitting there perfectly intact.
The second common cause is a version mismatch: a backup taken from a newer iOS version cannot be restored onto an older one, which catches people out when replacing a lost phone with an older handset.
The third is encryption. If “Encrypt local backup” was ticked — often years ago, once, and forgotten — the backup is protected with a password separate from your Apple Account. Without it the data cannot be read, and that is the one scenario where the honest answer is usually no.
The Key Point: Refusing to Restore Is Not the Same as Lost
A restore is all-or-nothing. It either rebuilds an entire device or fails, and one damaged file is enough to stop it. Extraction works differently: the backup is opened as a set of files and the recoverable content is pulled out directly, without asking a phone to accept it.
That is why a backup declared corrupt by iTunes will frequently still yield photos, messages, contacts and notes. You do not get a working phone image, you get the contents — which is usually what you actually wanted.
Where Are These Backups Kept?
- On a Mac: inside your user Library, under Application Support, MobileSync, Backup.
- On Windows: within the Apple MobileSync folder in your user profile's AppData.
- On an old computer that has been retired or sold — worth retrieving before the machine is wiped.
- Inside a Time Machine set, which frequently holds an older backup long after the live one was overwritten.
- On an external drive, if the backup location was ever moved to save space.
If the computer holding the backup has itself failed, the backup can usually still be reached — that becomes a drive recovery job first, then an extraction.
What Should You Avoid Doing?
Do not delete a backup that failed to restore in order to make a fresh one — the failed backup is your archive, and a new backup of a replacement phone will not contain the old data. Do not let iTunes overwrite it by backing up a different device to the same computer. And if the folder looks damaged, copy the whole thing somewhere safe before anything else is attempted.
Assessment is free: we look at what the backup actually contains and tell you plainly what can be extracted before you commit to anything. If it turns out to be encrypted with an unknown password, we will say so rather than charge you to find out. For the device itself, see iPhone data recovery.
