Hard Drive and SSD Shredding for Sydney and All of Australia
Some data should not merely be erased; the thing that stored it should stop existing. Shredding delivers exactly that, mechanically reducing hard drives and SSDs to twisted fragments that no technique can piece back together.
It is the method of choice when the stakes are highest: client databases, medical histories, legal matters, financial records, intellectual property, or simply a business owner who wants to watch the problem disappear. Once a drive has been through the shredder, the question of recovery is closed for good.
NexusByte runs a documented shredding service from Sydney for businesses and households nationwide, handling everything from a single drive brought in by hand to pallets of decommissioned equipment cleared from a server room.

Our shredding service includes:
When Physical Destruction Is the Right Call
Shredding is deliberately final. Knowing when that finality is warranted, and when a cheaper method would serve you just as well, is where our advice starts.
Software erasure suits working drives with routine data, and degaussing dispatches magnetic media efficiently, but both leave a physical object behind and both have edge cases. Flash storage shrugs off magnetic fields. Failed drives cannot run wiping software. Damaged devices may hide areas no tool can verify. Shredding removes every one of those question marks by removing the storage medium itself: platters, chips, controllers and all are broken into small pieces. For organisations retiring equipment that has held genuinely sensitive information, that physical certainty, backed by an itemised record of the devices destroyed, is usually worth far more than the hardware ever was.
When the honest answer to how sure you need to be is completely, shredding is the method we recommend.
Built for high stakes. Engineered for zero doubt.
Physical destruction is the standard choice for organisations whose stored data carries real consequences.
Whatever your industry, if a leaked drive would make headlines or lose clients, shred it.
Your Data, Protected. Guaranteed.
We safeguard and recover your data with clear pricing and a no-risk promise on recovery work.
Your data stays backed up, secure, and recoverable when you need it most.

The value of shredding lies in what stops being possible once it is done.
A shredded drive is the one retirement decision you will never need to revisit.
Our Documented Shredding Process
Chain of handling matters as much as the shredder itself, so every stage produces a record.
Other Ways We Destroy Data
Degaussing for Hard Drives & Tapes
Magnetic drives and backup tape archives can be neutralised quickly with degaussing, which is often the efficient choice for large tape collections.
Includes:
- Purpose-built for magnetic media

- Kills dead drives software cannot wipe
- Documented throughout
Free Hard Drive & SSD Recycling
Retiring ordinary drives with ordinary data? Our free option erases them with wiping software and recycles the hardware without charge.

- No-cost secure erasure
- Great for household clean-ups
- Drives kept out of landfill
- Simple drop-off
All Data Destruction Services
For mixed retirement projects we blend shredding, degaussing and erasure under one plan, sorted by what each device actually needs.

- Suits full office decommissions
- Consolidated documentation

Why Businesses Choose NexusByte for Shredding
- Physical destruction with itemised records

You bring the drives and the doubt; only one of them leaves with you.
What Is Hard Drive Shredding?
Hard drive shredding is the physical destruction of a drive by feeding it through an industrial shredder that reduces the platters and circuit board to fragments. It is the most conclusive form of data destruction available, because it removes the possibility of recovery rather than relying on the data having been correctly overwritten.
It is the right choice in three situations: when a drive has failed and cannot be written to, when the data is sensitive enough that verification alone is not sufficient assurance, and when a regulator, insurer or client requires physical destruction as a matter of policy.
Shredding or Erasure — Which Do You Need?
Erasure keeps the hardware usable. If a drive is healthy and the machine is being redeployed, resold or donated, software erasure achieves the same security outcome and leaves you with a working asset.
Shredding is the answer when erasure is not possible or not enough. A drive that will not spin up cannot be overwritten — there is no way to write to it and no way to verify a wipe — so destruction is the only method that provides certainty. The same applies where an audit requires evidence of physical destruction rather than a wipe certificate.
The practical question is simply whether the drive still works and whether you want it back. If either answer is no, shredding is usually the simpler and safer route.
Why Not Just Drill It or Smash It?
Drilling a hole through a drive feels decisive, and it is far less effective than it looks. A drill destroys a small area of one or two platters; the remaining surface is undamaged and, in a laboratory, still readable. The same goes for a few hits with a hammer — a bent case and a cracked platter are not the same as destroyed data.
Industrial shredding is different in kind, not degree. The entire drive is reduced to fragments, so there is no intact surface left to read. It also produces something a hammer cannot: a documented, repeatable process that stands up when someone asks for proof.
There is a safety dimension too. Drilling a drive releases fine particulates, and puncturing anything containing a lithium cell is a genuine fire risk.
What About SSDs and Phones?
SSDs need particular care. Their data lives in NAND chips a few millimetres across, so a shred size adequate for a spinning platter can leave an intact chip in the debris. Solid state media should be destroyed to a finer particle size for that reason, and it is worth confirming that whoever handles yours accounts for the difference.
Phones, tablets and memory cards fall into the same category — small chips, so fine destruction. Backup tapes are different again and are usually better handled by degaussing, which destroys the magnetic structure without the bulk of shredding reels.
What You Should Receive Afterwards
- A certificate of destruction listing every device by serial number, with the date and method recorded.
- A documented chain of custody from collection through to destruction.
- The option to witness the destruction on site where policy or peace of mind requires it.
- Responsible recycling of the shredded material rather than disposal to landfill.
- A record you can hand to an auditor, insurer or client without further explanation.
Keep those certificates. Under the Privacy Act the obligation is to take reasonable steps to destroy personal information you no longer need, and a certificate is how you demonstrate that you did — long after the hardware itself is gone.
