Degaussing solves the problem at the physical level. A degausser applies an intense magnetic field that scrambles the recorded patterns on the media, wiping out not just your files but the low-level formatting the device needs to function. What remains cannot be read, remounted or restored.

Degaussing is one of the most decisive destruction methods available for magnetic media, but it is the wrong tool for some devices, and we would rather tell you that upfront.
Inside a magnetic hard drive or backup tape, your data exists as microscopic magnetic regions. A degausser saturates the media with a field strong enough to randomise those regions entirely, destroying the data along with the servo tracks the hardware relies on. For hard drives, that means the unit will never operate again; for tapes, the cartridge becomes blank, unreadable material. The critical caveat: degaussing does nothing to SSDs, USB sticks or memory cards, because flash storage holds data as electrical charge rather than magnetism. Passing an SSD through a degausser leaves every byte intact. If your retirement pile mixes flash and magnetic media, we separate it and shred the flash devices instead, so nothing slips through on a technicality.
