iPhone data recovery is the retrieval of photos, messages, contacts and app data from an iPhone or iPad that will not turn on, has a dead screen, has been through water, or has lost data to a failed update or accidental erase. It also covers the surrounding copies — an iCloud backup that will not restore, or a computer backup that has stopped being readable.
Being straight about this from the outset: an iPhone is the hardest consumer device to recover data from, by design. Apple built it that way deliberately, and the security that protects your phone if it is stolen protects it just as effectively from you.
Every iPhone encrypts its storage in hardware using a key held in the Secure Enclave, a separate chip fused to that specific logic board. The flash memory can be removed and read directly and it produces nothing but ciphertext, because the key never exists outside that chip. Chip-off recovery, which works on cameras and USB sticks, simply does not apply here.
That leaves one realistic route: getting the phone itself running long enough to unlock normally. Where the fault is a battery, charging port, screen or a broken connection, that is often achievable. Where the logic board itself is damaged — heavy corrosion after a swim, or a hard impact — the Secure Enclave may be unreachable, and with it the key.
This is also why nobody can honestly promise recovery from a locked iPhone whose passcode is unknown. Anyone claiming otherwise is either mistaken or not being straight with you.
For most people the fastest recovery has nothing to do with the broken phone. iPhones sync more than their owners realise, and checking these costs nothing:
Where a backup exists but will not restore, that is a solvable problem in itself — see iTunes and Finder backup recovery for corrupted, encrypted or partially written backups.
Phones that still power on, even with no working display, have the best outcomes — the data is intact and the obstacle is access. Phones dead from a charging or battery fault are frequently revivable for long enough to extract everything. Water-damaged phones vary case by case and depend on how quickly they were switched off. Phones with catastrophic board damage, or locked phones with an unknown passcode, generally cannot be recovered at all.
